Earlier this month, basketball’s most prestigious competition made its annual transatlantic trip to our shores once again. This time around, the regular season match at London’s O2 Arena saw the Atlanta Hawks go up against the Brooklyn Nets, and the NBA asked us to help celebrate the occasion by throwing an evening of entertainment for fans, guests and a few famous faces.
The scene of all this was SushiSamba, 40 floors up London’s Heron Tower and an incredible setting for such a great occasion. The prestigious Larry O’Brien Trophy certainly didn’t look out of place anyway.
We transformed the venue into the ultimate slice of basketball heaven for the night. Freestyle performers added to the fun, doing their thing as they mingled amongst guests in the early stages.
The build-up to the game created a huge buzz on social media. An interactive Twitter wall capitalised on this, allowing guests to see their tweet mentioning the NBA’s handle or the #NBALondon hashtag and scroll through others doing the same.
Famous faces at the event included Idris Elba, footballers Clint Dempsey and Edgar Davids, and X-Factor stars Tamera Foster and Rough Copy. And of course the legendary DJ Premier – the party really got started when he hit the decks. (Credit to Instagram user @popsbacka for the super cool image of the man himself).
Good times were had by all, and it set the mood for the next day on-court where the Nets emerged victorious in a 127-110 win. Following the event the incoming NBA commissioner Adam Silver promised the UK’s basketball fans more of the same with a commitment to more regular season games in London over the coming years.
So we’ll just have to do it all again! No complaints here.
